New intermodal infrastructures

The prerequisite of a freight village is the availability of an efficient railway  terminal and its constant adjustment to not only current but also perspective traffic volumes. A terminal that is undersized or unsuitable for structures and services runs the risk of hampering the economic development  of the whole territory at all levels. That is why the short-medium term objectives of CePIM include a new Intermodal Terminal to ensure the strengthening of intermodal and/or combined transport envisaged by the corporate mission.

Over the next years this project will allow to streamline railway transport activities and supply more adequate structures to the distribution system developed in collaboration with the port of La Spezia and freight village of Verona (see Shuttle project), which will see the Parma freight village confirm its role as a backing structure of the La Spezia hub.
Mention should also be made of positive repercussions in terms of environmental sustainability and road safety: railway transports of freight and containers along the Tyrrhenian-Brenner axis will decrease the pressure on road transports and reduce the presence of lorries circulating on the road network.

The project calls for the supply of electric power to the railway line inside the freight village. It is the result of an agreement between the Ministry of Transports, the Province of Parma and CePIM spa – envisaging  funds amounting to 2.5 million Euro – the project is aimed at the supply of electric power to the railway line from Castelguelfo to the freight village, covering a 4 kilometre stretch. The innovation deriving from the provision of infrastructures will enable CePIM to maximise operations and improve the quality of freight services by driving the trains arriving in Castelguelfo directly to the freight village and consequently eliminating bottlenecks.

According to the agreement, the funds provided by the Ministry will contribute to the project in terms of approximately 50% of the overall investments, estimated at 5.8. million Euro approximately. The remaining investments will be made by CePIM.

This result is a fundamental step in developing the freight village, from the viewpoint of both the maximisation of logistic and transport activities carried out there – with positive repercussions on the overall economic system of Parma – and its contribution in terms of environmental sustainability and the equality of life at local level.
